A County Divided, “A TEAM UNITED”
Goals as Sheriff:
· To serve the citizens of Otero County with the purpose as stated in the Oath of Office. To implement, adhere to, and support both the United States and New Mexico Constitutions
· To serve the citizens of Otero County with the core values of “Integrity First”, “Service Before Self”, and “Excellence in all We Do”
Experience:
· Wally graduated from the NM Law Enforcement Academy in 1979; he has served as a law enforcement officer in Otero County for 24 years; retiring from the Otero County Sheriff Department in 2004 as a Sergeant. He was awarded the State of New Mexico "Officer of the Year" in 1985.
· Steve graduated from the NM Law Enforcement Academy in 2005. Prior to becoming a Deputy Sheriff, he retired from the U.S. Air Force in 2004 at Holloman AFB after serving 21 years. His last three years on active duty he was a Reserve Deputy Sheriff and a part-time dispatcher with the Otero County Sheriff’s Department before being hired full-time in 2004 as a Patrol Deputy.
Community Efforts:
· Wally formed & organized “Keystone Kops, Toys for Tots” program, which has continually served Otero Counties less fortunate youths for the past 28 years.
· Wally served over 10 years on the Board of Directors for Otero County Boys & Girls Club; to include being one if its past President’s
· In 2009 Wally received Sertoma’s “Service to Mankind” Award
· Steve has been involved with local Boy Scouting since 1997; holding numerous positions in local Cub Scout Packs , to include Pack 124 on Holloman AFB and Pack 147 in Alamogordo and Boy Scout Troops. He was Scoutmaster for Troop 147 for 2 years in Alamogordo; overseeing a number of fine young men earning the highest rank in Scouting; Eagle Scout.
· Steve has received numerous volunteering awards over the last 13 years; to include The Military Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal
Ideas for YOUR Sheriff Department:
· Bring back a true department briefing, with an open door policy, allowing county citizens to attend
· Establish an “on-line” reporting system for non-emergency calls for service
· Establish a “Crime Mapping” system to better allocate department resources
· Establish a “Citizen Academy” to foster cooperation between the department and the citizens of Otero County
· Increase the Detective Division to include placing a full-time detective in the Chaparral Community
· Expand the Department oversight of sexual predators living within the county
· Assist in the creation of a "Family Advocacy Center" for Otero County to assist victims of domestic violence, child abuse, and sexual assault with a centralized location which combines law enforcement, victim advocates, legal, and medical staff to help decrease the stress and trauma victims already face
